California Wage Laws 2024
Starting in 2024, California introduced new minimum wage laws that will affect most young workers in the state by changing the amount they earn when starting a new job, and these laws will raise the state minimum wage to $16. This isn’t the only change as fast food workers will get a raise along with certain healthcare employees.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills raising wages for fast food and healthcare workers. They will not all come into effect at the same time. The first change happened on the first of January this year with the final change happening on May 1, 2024. While the state minimum wage is $16 many cities have different laws so you should be aware of the laws where you live.
This could also be a good time for teenagers without a job to apply. A great first job is working in a fast-food restaurant, and this would be the best time to apply because the minimum wage for fast-food workers was raised to $20 an hour which is 4 dollars more than the state minimum wage. This means as soon as you start a job you will be making at least $20 an hour.
The minimum wage for healthcare workers will increase to $21 on May 1, 2024, benefiting 460,000 healthcare workers across the state. Subsequently, it will be raised to $25 in either 2026, 2027, or 2028.
